Rapid advances in digital technologies and data science are having a large impact on health care services. While digital health initiatives are anticipated to curb costs and to increase efficiency of health services, they also have fundamental consequences for the way in which patient’s value and interact with the health system. Specifically, digital health tools that provide patients with alternative disease- and treatment-related information, may affect the doctor-patient relationship. However, thus far, evidence on how digital technologies, such as online health information platforms, affect the doctor-patient relationship in general, and the diagnosis and treatment of doctors in particular, is still limited –both, theoretically and empirically.
Anecdotal evidence on misdiagnosis due to poor quality of doctors is common in Georgia. At the same time, there are also frequent complaints by patients that doctors oversubscribe diagnostics and treatments to extract additional rents particularly from wealthier patients. Currently platforms for health advice, which provide diagnoses and treatment advice based on symptoms listed.
Project “Prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Georgia and audit study of the role of information for diagnosis and treatment” aims to explore the prevalence of non-communicable diseases and its risk-factors in Georgia on the one hand and on the other hand, based on an audit study test how these tools affect the treatment behavior of doctors in the light of non-communicable diseases; whether online health information is a complement or substitute to a physical doctor visit and how this interacts with other factors such as trust and perceived doctor quality on these aspects within the context of Georgia.
