Argument Structure in Georgian Sign Language (GESL)

Sign language linguistics is a young area of linguistic research. However, sign language linguistics in general has a relatively long history in comparison to Georgian Sign Language linguistics, which only counts several years.

Morphosyntactic structure of Georgian language has been thoroughly explored, as its features are commonly acknowledged to be of great significance. Recently conducted researches presume that the linguistic properties of Georgian Sign Language are also noteworthy and further researches could lead us to new discoveries. it is obvious that collected data will be invaluable for cross-linguistic study of sign languages.

One of the fundamental properties that languages possess is the ability to mark argument structure by utilizing various mechanisms: word order, agreement, case markers, prepositions, wherein word order and agreement are plausibly the most extensively researched topics in sign language linguistics. However, existence of case marker is an extremely rare phenomenon.

The key purpose of my research is to explore the properties of argument structure and argument marking in GESL, to define the agreement markers, to investigate other means of agreement marking in order to develop new theoretical approaches to argument structure in GESL.
